 Major Forests and Protected Areas

Sundarbans: West Bengal; the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Chambal National Sanctuary: Located near the tripoint of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh; covers 5,400 km². 

Abujmarh forest: Chhattisgarh; known for being home to indigenous tribes and Naxal-Maoist insurgency. 

Saranda forest: Jharkhand; recognized as Asia's largest Sal Forest. 

Namdapha National Park: Arunachal Pradesh; the fourth largest national park in India. 

Pichavaram Mangrove Forest: Tamil Nadu; the world's second biggest mangrove forest. 

Forest Types and Coverage

Tropical Moist Deciduous: The largest category, covering 2,36,794 km² (37.0% of total forest). 

Tropical Dry Deciduous: The second largest, covering 1,86,620 km² (28.6% of total forest). 

Tropical Wet Evergreen: Found in the Western Ghats and North-Eastern India, covering 51,249 km² (8.0%). 

Total Forest Cover: As per recent assessments, the total forest cover (including scrub) is 7,54,252 km²
